1796 S-88 R4 Liberty Cap NGC VG Details, Environmental Damage. The obverse is dull dark steel brown and chocolate while the reverse is a much lighter shade of sandy tan mixed with chocolate brown highpoints (possibly from a light cleaning on that side). The surfaces are covered with very fine roughness but the only sign of verdigris is a small spot between the nostril and upper lip. Both sides show a few light scuff marks, none significant. The date and legends are complete but the dull surfaces hurt the eye appeal. I suspect a good brushing would help a lot. Our grade is F12 sharpness net G5. The attribution is shown on the NGC label.

1796 S-89 R3 Liberty Cap PCGS graded XF40. PCGS graded EF-40. Attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown with lighter brown toning in protected areas. There are a few small areas of slightly darker olive brown toning on both sides, including one that extends from the second T in STATES down to the left edge of the fraction. The surfaces are smooth and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only notable contact mark is a dull, shallow rim nick over the T in UNITED. Nicely struck MDS, Breen state II. There is minor crumbling at the lips and evidence of die clashing on both sides. Nicely struck, better than most of this variety, with ONE CENT complete and only minor weakness at OF. Our grade is VF25. This piece is a new discovery for the die variety and it is tied for second finest known honors with three other pieces in the EAC census (and two of those are impounded in the ANS Museum). The finest known grades only VF30. A very important early large cent for the collector of Sheldon die varieties. PCGS population 1; none finer at PCGS for the variety.

The only defect that reaches the unaided eye is a light rim bruise left of the middle curls. The date is bold and the legends are complete and clear. 1796 S-91 R3 Liberty Cap VG10+. A point or two sharper but there are a few too many minor marks for the higher grade. No corrosion or verdigris. Most of the marks are tiny pre-striking planchet chips that didn't completely disappear when the planchet was struck. This was a result of the very late state of the obverse die where die swelling and cracks weakened the strike left of the lowest curls, and that resulted in weakness on the opposing legend at D-STA. Otherwise the only notable marks are an arcing scratch through the N in UNITED and a shallow planchet flake at the top of that E (as struck). Attractive glossy chocolate brown and steel. LDS, Breen state VII, with horizontal die cracks in the field before the portrait and obvious swelling on both sides of the portrait. The date is bold and the legends are strong except for weakness at D-STA as previously mentioned. A decent example of a neat die state.

1796 S-100 R5 Draped Bust AG3. Slightly sharper on the lower half of the obverse and upper half of the reverse where the designs were more strongly impressed into the planchet (thanks to the die faces being out of perfect horizontal alignment). Lot 329
1797 S-133 R5 Stemless Wreath VG10. A couple points sharper, perhaps even better on the obverse, but there are a few light contact marks on the obverse. The notable ones are some very fine hairline scratches across the date, a few more in the field left of the lower curls, and a rim nick left of the lower end of the hair ribbon. Only the rim nick is visible without the aid of a glass and the eye appeal of this cent is quite nice for the grade. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown with a few splashes of slightly darker olive brown toning on the lower half of the obverse. LDS, Breen state IV late, with a clear radial die crack from the rim over the bust tip to the neck near the bust. Struck on a planchet that shows partial diagonal reeding, Breen's planchet type V. A very nice example of a tough die variety. Graded F12 net VG10 and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, his photo #28067.
Estimated Value $800-UP.

1797. Reverse of 1797, stems. Choice glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are smooth and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. No spots, stains, or roughness. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a faint hairline scratch from the nose into the field at right where it fades away, and another from the ear to the throat. M-LDS, Breen state VII. There is a clear die crack through CA and the ribbon end to the dentils below plus swelling at RICA and UN. The date is bold and the legends are complete. Our grade is F15+, close to VF20. (PCGS # 1422) .
Estimated Value $750-UP.

1797 S-139 R1 F15. Ten points sharper but cleaned and retoned glossy reddish chocolate brown and dark steel. The obverse is perfectly smooth but extremely faint granularity covers most of the reverse, strongest at the F in OF and just left of the fraction. The date and legends are all bold.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

1798 S-144 R5+ Large 8 with Style I Hair G4. Slightly sharper but cleaned and retoned a mostly glossy light chocolate and darker steel brown with traces of reddish tan from the old cleaning in a couple of the protected areas. No verdigris, only small contact marks. Most of the contact marks are small rim nicks, the strongest of these over the E in AMERICA. A dull pinprick at the left top of the first S in STATES and another at the bottom of the I in UNITED can help identify this cent. EDS, Breen state I, with an obvious dull wave across the reverse from TA in STATES to the E in AMERICA but no cracks. The date is complete and clear, and the legends are complete except for ONE CENT, which is essentially gone thanks to the bulge caused by the wave across the planchet. Far from perfect but still a decent low grade example of this rare variety.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.
